Bill Reckelberg (Gordy’s father) began his seven piece brass band in 1912 in Ellisville, WI. The Reckelberg Brass Band played for numerous wedding showers, weddings, anniversaries, Kermiss’s, chesse factory parties and public dances. Gordy, at the age of sixteen, started playing with his father’s band. He continued in the field of music and began his own seven piece orchestra in 1972. The Gordy Reckelberg Band played German, Bohemian, Big Band and Modern music for numerous events and traveled/performed in several states.
Gordy had his own radio show for 25 years on radio station WAUN (Kewaunee, WI). Along with Joe Mueller the weekly broadcast was live, with music, talk and call in requests. Joe was the president of the Gordy Reckelberg Fan Club. He would help Gordy on the air as well as with organizing many of the bus trips for the band. Gordy’s theme song for the show was the “Hugging Sally Polka,” a song arrangement he wrote for his wife Sally’s birthday.
In 1988 Gordy was elected as “Band Leader of the Year” by the Wisconsin Orchestra Leaders Association. Although Gordy and the band are retired he still has CDs, a number of records and cassettes still available.
